List 1 Text Workshops (Reading & Responding)

Overview

Maximise your SAC and examination marks through this unique series of workshops which will enhance your understanding of your key VCE text. These workshops will allow you to explore and analyse ideas with confidence and create excellent responses to questions as a result. Learn effective techniques that will enhance your performance in assessment tasks, explore a variety of opinions, gain access to expert advice and guidance and ensure that you know your text in detail.

Part 1 – Understanding the Text (3 Hours)

This intensive three hour workshop will explore and analyse the theme, characters, plot, structure, and context of the VCE text that you are studying for the Text Response section of your course. As well as considering the content of the texts, this workshop will also analyse the ways in which authors have used language and literary conventions in order to convey meaning. This session will also provide you with the necessary knowledge to produce detailed and insightful essay responses.

Part 2 – Character Questions (3 Hours)

This in-depth workshop will support the creation of high quality responses to the text, through the exploration of character-based questions and how to address them. Sessions will focus on sample questions from past papers, working through example questions and possible responses. They will include tips on how to choose the right question to respond to, together with detailed analysis of how to write about characters well, how to compare and contrast characters, how to demonstrate knowledge of a character’s development and how to explore complex ideas such as ambiguities, moral issues, subtle relationships and thoughts, and the interchange between characters and themes. Students will also be given the opportunity to submit an essay for marking by an experienced VCAA English exam marker (additional charges apply).

Part 3 – Thematic Questions (3 Hours)

This in-depth workshop will support the creation of high quality responses to the text, through the consideration of themes and concepts from the novel and how to address questions that call for thematic analysis. Sessions will focus on sample questions from past papers, working through example questions and possible responses. They will include tips on how to choose the right question to respond to, together with detailed analysis of how to write about themes well, how to ensure that themes are fully explored and cross referenced with other relevant ideas and how to explore complex ideas such as meta themes, ambiguities, and the interchange between themes and characters. Students will also be given the opportunity to submit an essay for marking by an experienced VCAA English exam marker (additional charges apply).
